I Love You?
LOCATION: Bronx, New York
"I love you."
These three words are some of the most powerful words anyone could ever say to you. Whether someone has told you they loved you or not, we all understand the weight of these words. Even the people who toss this phrase around loosely without really meaning it know that telling someone "I love you" is heavily weighted and it has meaning.
Perhaps you've been in a relationship in the past where someone told you they loved you and then, you realized that they didn't really mean it or they just said it to get what they wanted out of you. Maybe you're in love with someone now but lately, their actions don't really seem to line up with the whole "I love you" thing. Maybe you find yourself asking questions like, "if you really loved me, then why would you do this?"
Love can be a messy thing. It can play with our emotions even break our hearts. It keep us up at night and make us question our worth, our security, and even our faith. Even if you find yourself caring for someone and the words "I love you" have never been uttered, there is a good chance you've felt that tug in your heart as you ask yourself questions wondering if these feelings are real or promising. Today, be encouraged in knowing that as rewarding as romantic love can be, romantic love is not your identity. Yes, God honors the union between man and wife (Hebrews 13:4) and uses them to multiply the earth (Genesis 1:28), but God's love demonstrated to us through Jesus Christ is what truly changes our lives and our hearts. It is His love that sought after us when we were at our worst. It is His love that will never let us down. So remember this when you feel letdown by human love. Remember this when your heart is broken by what someone has done to it. Now is the time to return to the arms of Jesus and learn what the ultimate "I love you" means. This is where you will find your identity and your worth when it comes what it means to be loved.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 (NIV)
